Endodontics QuestionsSan Antonio, Texas
How bad is the pain during and after endodontic (root canal) treatment? Modern anesthetics ensure there is little or no pain during your root canal treatment, although you may experience a feeling of pressure. For a few days after the root canal, you may experience some soreness. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually work well to alleviate this soreness, although sometimes Dr. Hale will prescribe one. Is there any special care I should take after the procedure? You should avoid hard or crunchy foods until the permanent filling and crown are in place. Otherwise, you may inadvertently fracture the still-unrestored tooth. Continue to floss and brush your teeth as usual. This prevents bacteria from flourishing, not only in the treated tooth, but in your other teeth and gums. Are there any alternatives to endodontic treatment? The only other option is to have the affected tooth extracted. In most cases, to keep your remaining teeth from shifting, the extracted tooth must be replaced with an implant, a fixed bridge or a removable denture. How expensive is it to have a root canal? Many dental insurance plans cover all or part of the costs so be sure and contact your agent to learn more. Costs vary for root canals, depending on how complex the procedure is, and on which tooth is affected. Some teeth take more time due to being more difficult to reach than others. In general, it costs more to replace a missing tooth than to restore a badly-decayed tooth with a root canal and crown. Will I be able to drive after the treatment? In most cases, yes. However, to be on the safe side, phone Dr. Hale's staff before your appointment to ensure that you do not need to someone to drive you home. How soon will I be able to return to my normal routine? Usually the next day. Again, to be cautious, be sure and discuss your recovery time with Dr. Hale. Root canals are famous for being the worst dental scenario to go through, but in fact, they are pretty painless and efficient these days. Dentistry has come a long way in recent years, so that dental pain is rare, procedures are done more swiftly and accurately and with superior materials, and patient education is more extensive. Diagnosis can also be done earlier, and that reduces the cost and time needed for treatment. So don't delay in contacting us in our San Antonio, Texas offices.
